When selecting a wood for your project, I believe it is better to pick the color of wood with only a clear finish on it, rather than attempting to stain a wood the preferred color. For example, why would one put walnut stain on maple when it is easier to just start with walnut and put a clear finish on it. One might try to make pine look like mahogany but it will never look right. Pine looks good just being pine, and mahogany will never look like cherry, and so on.
